Our History

Some history by photograph of Main Street Books and the surrounding downtown area.

Some of our oldest photos--1860s or 1870s--Corner of Main and 4th--Looking north on Main.  Bookstore would be in block directly behind Finefrock and Walters.

--The bookstore block 1880-1885--Tent in Temple Court.

 --S. Engwiller--c. 1900 - Main Street.

--This view was drawn sometime around 1900-1905.  When the building was remodeled, the tower was removed and the exterior walls sheathed in rock.

-The entrance to the bank--pre-1914.

--Mansfield Savings Bank at Fourth and Main, 1914.  The building still looks much like it did in 1914--now only grayer with time.  The bank had just been remodeled extensively.  This is how it used to look.

--Blecker Building at the corner of Fourth and Main--The night in 1957, February 5th & 6th the fire that transitioned the building from three stories to two.

--Bookstore block in the sack 1970's.

--Masonic Temple--Hence the name 'Temple Court'--Temple was torn down in the 1960's or 1970's--Martini's on Main building to the right.
